Ergonomics in Endoscopy : The Daily Challenge of Gastro-enterologists
Gastroenterologists face significant ergonomic challenges due to prolonged static postures, repetitive motions, and high manual dexterity required for endoscopic procedures, leading to a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Optimizing endoscopic tool design, work environments, and ergonomic training can help reduce these risks.
This study examines the prevalence, impact, and risk factors of MSDs among endoscopists and highlights the importance of ergonomic principles in managing and preventing these conditions.
Materials and Methods:An observational, descriptive, and analytical study was conducted with 109 digestive endoscopy practitioners who anonymously completed a 23-question questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Jamovi 2.2.5 software.
Results:Participants had a median age of 35 years. Over 91% reported MSDs post-endoscopy, with common areas affected being the back, shoulders, and wrists. Significant risk factors included working 5-10 hours weekly, pre-specialty muscular pain, a sedentary lifestyle, BMI >25, and performing therapeutic endoscopies. Over 34% lacked ergonomic knowledge, and 98.2% had no prior ergonomic training.
Conclusion: The study underscores the need for ergonomic improvements and health promotion in endoscopy. With over 91% of practitioners affected by MSDs, integrating ergonomic practices and encouraging a healthy lifestyle are essential for reducing these disorders.
